The great American composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim wrote in a song, "If I cannot fly, let me sing." The most important thing I teach my students is that singing should ultimately be freeing. It is their innermost unique instrument. In lessons, they learn proper warm-up techniques, breathing and support, diction, and musicality. Once they master the basics of healthy voice production, they are able to express themselves safely through stylizing in genres they prefer, including classical, pop, and musical theater. I encourage my students to free the music that lives inside of them through singing.
